Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S and Mi Gaming laptop coming soon: All you need to know

Xiaomi, which has been in the news for its budget phones, announced a new smartphone that will take on devices in the mid-range flagship segment. The company also announced its first ever gaming laptop to promise high performance while playing games.

Here's what the two much-awaited gadgets are all about.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S

The Mi Mix 2S is the successor of the Mi Mix 2, which was launched in 2017 in India for Rs 35,999. The new phone will serve as the company’s latest flagship device and will bring with it top-of-the-line specs, including Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 845 SoC, along with a new and improved camera setup.

Like its predecessor, the Mi Mix 2S brings with it a similar ceramic and metal frame design, but thankfully, there is also support for wireless charging to sweeten the deal.

In terms of design, much remains the same as the phone has avoided an iPhone X-like notch at the top, and instead retained a front camera at the bottom. The phone sports the same 5.99-inch edge-to-edge display from last year. The major upgrade is when it comes to imaging.

Mi MIX 2S uses the latest Sony IMX363 flagship sensor with 1.4μm pixels. The setup this year is now 12MP+12MP with the company using a telephoto and a wide-angle lens combination. While the latter comes with f/1.8 aperture, wide-angle lens and four-axis OIS, the former comes an f/2.4 aperture. The camera setup also comes with dual pixel autofocus feature.

The phone also brings PDAF on the rear camera, which Xiaomi claims has helped it to receive a 101 score on DxOMark – the same as the iPhone X.

The 5-megapixel front camera comes with HDR and Face Unlock capabilities. Other connectivity features include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth v5.0, GPS/ A-GPS, and USB Type-C.

Powering the package is a 3400mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 technology. Using wireless charging, the phone can be fully recharged in 2 hours 40 minutes.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S starts at CNY 3,299 (roughly Rs 34,200) for the 6GB RAM and 64GB inbuilt storage variant, going up to CNY 3,599 (roughly Rs. 37,300) for the 6GB RAM and 128GB inbuilt storage, and CNY 3,999 (roughly Rs 41,400) for the top-end model with 8GB RAM and 256GB inbuilt storage.

While the top-end model will come with a wireless charger, the others won't. The wireless charger has been priced at CNY 99 (roughly Rs 1,000).

Xiaomi Mi Gaming laptop

The other big announcement from Xiaomi was the company's plan to launch the Mi Gaming Laptop. The 15.6-inch device is not Xiaomi's first notebook. But it surely is the company's foray into the space that is currently occupied by Dell's Alienware lineup.

As is the case with most Xiaomi products, the device — starting at RMB 5,999 (approx Rs 62,122) and going all the way up to 8,999 RMB (approx Rs 93,000) — has been launched at a disruptive price point that could see it become one of the first choices for any user looking to buy a gaming laptop.

Unlike other gaming laptops, Xiaomi's offering comes with a "simple and low-key design language that can be used professionally as well".

However, there are four separate RGB lanes on the laptop to instantaneously make it look more like a gaming machine.

In terms of raw specs, there's enough going on for Mi's Gaming laptop, which comes with a 15.6-inch Full HD display and is offered with up to 7th gen Intel Core i7 processor and NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1060 mobile GPU.

There are two storage variants available here — one with 8GB of RAM AND 128GB of SSD storage and the other with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage, plus an additional 1TB of HDD on both the variants.

Being a gaming machine, Xiaomi has focused heavily on improving the cooling of the machine. There are four 12V cooling fan outlets to effectively dissipate heat. They can be made to work full throttle by pushing the turbo cooling key that cools the laptop by 3 to 5 degrees in minutes.

To add to this, there's an RGB-backlit keyboard with additional programmable keys, Dolby Atmos-tuned audio, a built-in headphone amp and four USB 3.0 ports besides two USB-C ports.
