Remembering Bal Thackeray: Who remade ‘Bombay’

One of the most divisive figures in Indian politics, Bal Keshav Thackeray – or better known as Balasaheb Thackeray – would have celebrated his 93rd birthday today if not for the fateful day of November 17, 2012, when his life was brought to an abrupt end because of cardiac arrest.

Thackeray who remained a controversial, yet, much-revered figure throughout his life, shaped not only the political fortunes of the state of Maharashtra, but also New Delhi, and all as he sat on his throne in 'Bombay' – a city that he re-made during the last decades of the 20th century.
