Delhi Metro 'leaked MMS' throws up a Good Samaritan

This past week, social media turned out to be my best teacher. Now I see, how it works in layers of good and bad, sometimes as a tool in the hands of perverts and at other times, as a card up the sleeve of a good samaritan.

It started with a couple’s allegedly-intimate video, shot by someone on the Delhi Metro, going viral and stirring a debate on whether it is okay for girls to be so open in public. But the excitement lies in the way the story ended.

It has given me the confidence to say that despite men recording private moments discreetly and putting them out on social media to mock the “independent girls”, chivalry is not dead just yet.

This is thanks to a gentleman named Tarun who rather than just supporting the cause of women on social media actually walked the talk. He was one of the many people who found the Delhi Metro video on his Facebook timeline.

He realised the video had been shot without the knowledge of the two involved and the public sentiment was hitting the girl in question very hard, questioning her morality and character.

A gentleman named Tarun was one of the many people who found the Delhi Metro video on his Facebook timeline.

While on one side the feminist brigade had gone after the person who put the video out, on the other stood the "sanskari" brigade brutally assaulting the girl’s “besharmi” (shamelessness). But what Tarun did was neither of the two.

He noticed the video and circulated the details across WhatsApp, appealing to his friends to report it to Facebook and spread the message in their respective circles.

Within a few hours, his mission was successfully accomplished. Facebook reviewed it and pulled the video down. Though the damage had been done, the impact was minimised.

Learning: Not all men are the same. There are many educated, rational, feminist men who truly believe in respecting women and their right to privacy. They work silently behind the scenes to do their bit.

Also, the damage and negativity spread on social media can be squared out by the goodness and awareness pumped into society through this medium.

This is a mission where you can help like Tarun did.
