Bigg Boss is over. Why trolls must move on and stop heckling Hina Khan

Social media trolls camouflaging as fans are eating into the personal space of reality television stars.

While Bigg Boss (Season 11) was still on, its participants became so popular that viewers got divided into camps to pitch for their favourite contestants. Post the telecast, there used to be analyses, brickbats and accolades on social media. While it didn’t seem unusual while the show was on air, social media users still trolling television actor Hina Khan for Bigg Boss 11 is continued misuse of web platforms.

In this season, Hina Khan’s costume became a topic of discussion as she was rarely seen wearing the same outfit during her 90-day long stay inside the Bigg Boss house. It was rumoured that she did not own those dresses. That a lot of planning went into it, and that her stylist sourced those dresses from designers.

Recently, when the actor, who is vacationing after Bigg Boss 11, posted a photo on Twitter, she was trolled in reference to an episode which was a part of the show. While she was compared to a floor mop, somebody posted a photo of another woman donning the same fishtail gown and Hina was asked whether she had borrowed the dress from her.

Another social media user trolled Hina's knowledge of maths, referring to the episode in which she had failed to calculate the score of the contestants.

Trolling actors on social media for nothing has become the new normal. It is almost next to impossible to avoid trolls as actors require social media presence for promotional purposes as well. The pressure is more on reality television stars as they supposedly become famous owing to their fans who have voted for them during the show. Genuine fans expect them to come live on social media more frequently, reply to all comments on Twitter, which make them more vulnerable to such trolls.

While Hina chose to give befitting replies to all the Twitter trolls, the episode has had a negative impact on the actor. On an Instagram live, she urged her followers to spread less negativity. Otherwise, she would have to consider deleting her account, she said.

Whether Indian reality shows like Bigg Boss are scripted or not is a never-ending debate. Even if they are not, accommodating 24 hours in a telecast of an hour involves a lot of editing.

The way the contestants come across in front of the audience is designed and edited by the makers and many factors, including TRPs, go behind that decision.

Judging the contestants on the basis of such a show and then evaluating all their life decisions in its light is denying the celebrities their personal space.
