Japan to get only small-sized McDonald’s fries for a week. Twitter calls it a sad story

People in Japan will no longer be able to order large or medium fries at McDonald’s till December 30. Here's why.

Eating at Mcdonald’s is synonymous with stuffing your face with fries. But people in Japan will not be able to do so for a few days. People in Japan can only order small-sized french fries till December 30. Well, a Mcdonald’s meal without too many fries isn't really a happy meal but this step is a necessity right now.

WHY NO MORE MEDIUM AND LARGE FRIES?

This step has been implemented to avoid shortages. McDonald’s has been experiencing delays in shipments of potatoes that are used to make French fries. McDonald’s Japan imports potatoes from a port near Vancouver in Canada.

Due to large scale flooding near the Port of Vancouver and the ongoing pandemic, the fast food chain is experiencing a delay in the supply of potatoes. Therefore, the company has decided not to serve large and medium fries. This decision can help prevent shortages and the customers can continue to order small-sized fries during potato supply crunch.

"McDonald's Japan will temporarily limit sales of Medium- and Large-sized French Fries as a proactive measure to ensure customers can continue to enjoy McDonald's , French Fries. Customers will still be able to order Small-sized French Fries at all of our restaurants. To date, there have been no breaks in supply," McDonald’s told BBC.

TWITTER REACTS:

Many Twitter users called this shortage a "a sad story."

THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME:

People in Japan are not facing this issue for the first time. The medium and large-sized fries were banned in the past too. In 2014, an industrial dispute lead to the discharge of medium and large fries from their menu.

Not just in Japan, 1,250 outlets in the UK also faced supply issues in August 2021 which affected the availability of shakes and drinks in the country.
