This 'hip hop' music video from Meghalaya will make you feel voting is actually cool

Not many in mainland India would know that elections to the Assembly in Meghalaya are around the corner - scheduled in February 2018. But the upcoming polls have already become a major talking point in the northeastern state. Adding to the poll mania is this peppy music video which the office of the Meghalaya chief electoral officer has come up with to reach out to youngsters.

Tarak tak tak - the video has been written, arranged and performed by Summersalt, of Rock On 2 fame, and other artistes.

The high-spirited song has an assortment of sounds - electronic dance music, rock guitar and even bagpipes besides the indigenous instruments from the Khasi and Garo hills. The lyrics is a mix of English, Khasi-Pnar and Garo.

With the slogan of "one Life, one voice, one future, enrol now" the EC really is urging everyone to "take the plunge".

According to this report in The Telegraph, the state has 17,68,515 voters and chief electoral officer, FR Kharkongor, aims to take the figure to more than 18 lakh before Meghalaya votes for its new legislature early next year.

Meghalaya recorded 88 per cent turnout in the last Assembly elections in 2013.

The state - headed by Mukul Sangma-led Congress government - has become a major citadel for the BJP in its mission towards a Congress-mukt Bharat, especially after winning the Assembly elections in Assam in 2016, a "back-door entry" into Arunachal Pradesh, and forming a government in alliance with smaller parties in Manipur in 2017.

The BJP is now desperately looking to repeat the feats in the Christian-dominated Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland besides the Hindu-dominated Tripura, all of which will go to the polls in 2018.
