A video of people shouting and asking a Muslim family to leave a theatre hall is doing the rounds on social media. The reason behind the outrage is that the family didn't stand up for the national anthem before the movie started.
In this two-minute video-clip, a few men are seen shouting at the family, clearly threatening to slap them if they don't leave the theatre premises. And when they do, people welcome the move with a round of applause.
But here lies the big question, should national anthem be played in the theatres? Even if it's played, is it mandatory for everyone to stand up? Twitter suggests a few alternatives.
Who decided that the national anthem should be played before a movie? I go to the movies to have fun,not participate in the freedom struggle

You can respect the national anthem while sitting too. Supreme Court has ruled no need to stand for it

Why can't you stand up for the National Anthem in theatres? Have some respect for UNESCO for voting it the best, 10 years in a row.

Liberals will get national anthem evicted in response to eviction of a Muslim family for not standing up to it. Anthem is newest Sanghi.

I see no difference between those who refuse to stand up for national anthem and those who litter. Examples of self-fulfilling laziness.

My personal advice is - See National Flag: Salute or look respectfully. Hear National Anthem: Stand up. Meet National Animal: Run away.

The dignity of the national anthem is cheapened by subjecting it to the jurisdiction of vigilante mobs

We live in a country where people don't stand up to national anthem in theaters but always stand up to Dino Morea's entry and run away.

Biggest disrespect to the National Anthem is to play it before movies like Humshakals, Shandaar.

Need to ask: 'why not do away with idea of nation itself?' "Why even 15th and 26th?" So inconvenient to stand up! https://t.co/UwEMRkIngN
