Law professor taught perfect lesson for slut-shaming student over wearing shorts

The long and the short of this storm in a cropped pant is basically this - don't tell a girl what to wear.

After a professor at the prestigious National Law School of India University, V Nagaraj, chided a girl student during a lecture for wearing shorts on April 4, the entire class decided to confront the crusty old coot by one, turning up in shorts the day after, and two, writing a strong letter condemning his behaviour.

Among the gems that Nagaraj allegedly unleashed, this one stands out: "We all know why parents marry their children off - so that they can have sex. Just because the parents can marry off their children for this reason, it does not mean that the children have sex in front of their parents."

Obviously, the comments have unleashed a huge backlash with the justifiably offended students demanding an apology in no uncertain terms. But, when accosted for his deplorable sexism, Nagaraj hit back with more of the crassness: "You can come to class without a dress also. That is how your character is, I'm going to ignore you."

However, it seems the apology won't be coming easily out of V Nagaraj. In a statement to Legally India, he has denied all the allegations as "baseless", while to another web portal, he has said that due "investigation" into the matter must eb carried out.

How is it that a prestigious law school in 21st century India, a professor is still maligning a female student for what she chooses to wear. While we are debating the intricacies of the Constitution and demanding parity for women at every step, the guardians of legal jurisprudence - law professors - themselves are so woefully out of step with the reality.

What a terrible shame!
