Actress Radhika Apte trolled for bikini photo: What trolls want from celebs

Mostly, the comments are aimed at evoking reactions, either from the celebrity, or from other people on social media.

Actor Radhika Apte has been trolled on Instagram for posting a picture of herself in a bikini while she was holidaying in Goa. She was dress-shamed and slut-shamed because she “hurt the sentiments” of the social media moral police. She was accused of violating Indian culture and corrupting her young followers on the platform by posting “objectionable” photos, which are “bad in taste”.

The incident only adds to the long list of actors who have been trolled on the social media. The ever-growing list proves that the platform has become quite unsafe for celebrities as trolling them is a proven shortcut for attention and infamy. There are instances when celebrities like Taapsee Pannu have actually taken notice of the trolls and shut them down. But they must have been "glorifying" moments for the trolls, for that's what they want.

Actors are trolled for anything

Recently, actor Katrina Kaif was trolled after she posted a photo of sweating it out at a gym. While people commented about her body, some took offence over the caption she wrote. So apparently, the trolls need no reason to shame a celebrity.

Not long ago, actor Priyanka Chopra was trolled for wearing a Tricolour-like dupatta. Dangal actor Fatima Sana Shaikh was trolled for wearing a swimsuit during Ramzaan, and a saree exposing her midriff; the trolling incidents were only months apart.

Actor Deepika Padukone was once trolled for being too skinny. So, it is not only a bikini that gets famous people trolled on social media. Moral police is up in arms over anything; for Sunny Leone adopting a baby girl too, for Swara Bhaskar expressing her opinion after watching Sanjan Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat as well.

Trolls disguise as fans

All Bollywood actors, who are on social media, enjoy a huge fan following. And the trolls disguise as fans prying on the latest updates from the celebrities - whether it's a holiday photo, or a photo from film promotions, or a photo from a workout session. Trolling is not gender-sensitive. While the actresses are mostly dress-shamed and slut-shamed for their photos on Instagram, the actors are trolled for their opinions, posters of yet-to-be released movies etc on Twitter.

Trolls seek attention

In many cases, celebrities handle their social media accounts themselves. So what the trolls mostly want is attention. And even if they can’t extract a reply from the celebrity, an inappropriate comment on a photo of a celebrity will not go unnoticed. It will soon stir up a storm on the social media. Many people will start defending the celebrity and engage in an online war with the trolls, which in turn brings them unwarranted attention.

Trolls work through fake accounts

In many cases, the troll accounts cannot be tracked without cyber experts’ help. To steer clear of any kind of hassle, trolls create fake accounts which give away no information about the real person behind the trolling.
