DailyOh! Why Rihanna can't stop the talking, to what Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn want from India

Rihanna wants to talk about 'this' but Indian government says ascertain facts before talks.

Since November 2020, people in India have been talking about the farmers’ protest but Robyn Rihanna Fenty was busy talking about something else. When she got free from talking about the ‘else’, she asked “why aren’t we talking about this?!” Please don’t stop the talking...

The popstar may have meant why people were not talking about farmers’ protest but soon people began talking about Rihanna and foreign people, including Mia Khalia, who started talking about the protests after Rihanna’s tweet. In India, Diljit Dosanjh dedicated a song to Rihanna, naming the son RiRi after who else but Rihanna.

But actor Kangana Ranaut called Rihanna “a fool”. And guess what? It made no difference to Rihanna. Many others said Rihanna was being paid to talk about “this”. The other side, which is always there irrespective of what you are talking about, said Rihanna has more followers than Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi. Should Rihanna be made Prime Minister of India then? Hell no because Rihanna hasn’t applied for the job. She only wants to talk about “this”. Following Rihanna’s cue, environmental activist Greta Thunberg announced, “We stand in solidarity with the #FarmersProtest in India.” People on the other side then told Greta to make some time from standing in solidarity of protests and spend it sitting in school. Greta can spend her time where she wants and the Indian government says people can comment upon what they want but before commenting, people must “ascertain facts”.

In Parliament, the government asked the opposition to not make the farmers’ protest another Shaheen Bagh. The opposition said take the farm laws back. The Rajya Sabha has agreed to a 15-hour discussion on farm laws. So, Rihanna can go back to her singing because we are totally talking about “this”.

But we can talk a bit further about Rihanna whose music we love. Do you know what Rihanna’s legs are worth? Rs 7,29,40,000. In 2007, Gillette named Rihanna 'Celebrity Legs of a Goddess'.

That was Gillette’s marketing gimmick and marketing gimmicks come with a cost. So, Rihanna’s legs, as part of the title, were insured for US $1 million, which would today count to Rs 7,29,40,000. When asked about the insurance, the popstar said, “Do people really insure their legs for a million dollars? If it was my million dollars, I’d probably walk about in pants all day long.”

Rihanna’s legs are worth a million dollars but Rihanna’s support for the cause of the protesters could be priceless. Her support has made local global. So support makes the cut for the Word Of The Day. Support comes from Latin word supportare, where sup stands for ‘from below’ and portare for ‘carry’. Supportare basically meant to ‘convey, carry, bring up, bring forward’. When you help someone or something stand on its own or come forward or do what that someone or something wants to do, you are lending support. Oxford dictionary defines support as ‘to help or encourage somebody/something by saying or showing that you agree with them/it’. You can also support people without agreeing with them. That would be unconditional support. You can also support someone/something in lieu of money or favour. Generally, in such cases, the transaction is hidden while the support is visible.

Meanwhile, the government has asked Twitter to not support accounts that tweeted with genocide hashtags. The government had asked Twitter to remove such content and accounts after Twitter removed and restored such accounts. Twitter had blocked the accounts on government’s request, but the government says Twitter unblocked them unilaterally. What hashtag has the government taken objection to? This: 'Modi Planning Farmer Genocide'.

From Twitter to Amazon because why should Twitter have all the attention? Amazon has a new CEO in the form of Andy Jassy and he has the support of outgoing CEO Jeff Bezos. This is going to make no difference whatsoever to your order in transit but may have a bearing on the company’s policies in the long run. What is Bezos going to do? Well, he will be the executive chairman of the company and intends “to focus my energies and attention on new products and early initiatives”.

What else is new in the world? Saudi Arabia has banned flights from 20 nations and before you ask why should we care, the 20 nations include India. The ban comes after a rise in coronavirus cases in the country. Pakistan, United States, Brazil, Japan and several other nations are giving company to India on the list. The ban is temporary and Saudi Arabia has already started vaccinating people with the Covid-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech.

If you are wondering if we have got any good news too, yes, of course. Angelina Jolie's Those Who Wish Me Dead will release in theatres on May 14. The better news is that the movie will premiere simultaneously in theatres and OTT platform HBO Max.

What to do till then? Watch The White Tiger on Netflix. You also have the option of reading the book by Aravind Adiga. Why this and not that? Because both this and that on the same day may not help you focus on either this or that.

Stay focused, stay safe.

We will see you tomorrow.
