What a horror show: Donald Trump blocks Stephen King on Twitter

Donald Trump, the 45th president of the United States of America, is a global citizen laughing stock. The man tweets new words, praises Fox News without reason, says things that have no basis on facts or reality and his tweets from 2011, 2012 and 2013 have really not aged well (most look like him criticising himself as president). Add to all these atrocious qualities a skin thinner than paper. The man just cannot handle criticism, something that is being lobbed at him from all corners.

The latest person who seems to have gotten the president’s goat is internationally renowned author of horror fiction, Stephen King.

King has been openly critical of Trump on the social media ever since he announced his candidacy. And it’s not just pure despise that drives his criticism. He is genuinely afraid of Trump.

“A Trump presidency scares me more than anything else. I’m terrified that he’ll become president”, said King to Ron Charles, editor of The Washington Post’s Book World, during a Facebook Live interview. Take a moment to let that settle in. There is something in this world that scares Stephen King, the man who has scared generations of readers and cinema-goers.

But it seems that Trump finally managed to reach is breaking point after the author tweeted, “Trump's cabinet offers a postgraduate-level course in a**-kissing.”

Or perhaps it was this well-aimed jibe at Ivanka, "If Ivanka Trump had grown up in farm country, like some of us, she'd know her father is reaping exactly what he sowed."

Ouch.

While getting blocked for ad hominem remarks makes sense, but this crass remark is pretty much a general description of how the president’s office is functioning at present. Every day The Donald tweets some new form of tripe and every day, his cabinet goes out of its way to defend it on the news and social media, if one discounts his loyal fan-base altogether.

Getting blocked by Donald Trump thus is something like a badge of honour. The moment you know that you can get under his skin – and Trump has gone out of his way to defend the thickness of his skin, “I don’t have thin skin - I have very strong, very thick skin” - with a 140-characters worth of criticism, you know that you have done something right.

After getting blocked, King tweeted his immense grief. After all, who would want to be deprived of this daily dose of presidential comedy, something even Alec Baldwin hasn’t been able to achieve with his SNL skits.

Fortunately for him, another author from the fantasy genre came to his rescue. JK Rowling, the author of the famous Harry Potter series, was quick on letting him know that she still had access and would be more than happy to share screenshots with him. King, however, seemed to be happy with Mike Pence’s antic for the moment.

And while for King or Rowling, Trump is little more than entertainment, the president’s block-happy, tiny hands are a huge problem when you look at just who all he managed to block since he became president. The club now includes VoteVets.org, a liberal veterans group, which shared what it claims is a screenshot of its block notification.

Isn’t it a rather comforting thought, the leader of one of the most powerful countries in the world is a 70-year-old man-child who responds to open criticism by not only turning a deaf ear to it, but also actively blocking it, dismissing it and calling it lies without any proof to offer?

Stephen King may have written many tales of horror, but a haunted hotel, a possessed car, a mad dog or even a creepy blood-thirsty clown are nowhere close to as scary as the idea that a huge amount of nuclear weapons are at the disposal of a man who behaves like this.

In that vein, perhaps King should write a new novel; about Trump. But hopefully it’ll be one where he doesn’t manage to crawl out of his own nest of lies and incompetency by digging a hole in the wall.
