Donald Trump launches his own social media app. Internet is divided

As he had promised, Donald Trump has released his very own social media application known as Twitt- sorry, TRUTH Social. The app was launched on Apple's App Store on February 21 in the United States, and automatically downloaded for Apple users who had pre-bought the app. February 21 is also celebrated as Presidents Day in the US.

The app is currently only available to download in the US and it is unclear whether this app would be accessible in India in the future (not sure if anyone's missing it, tbh).

The launch of TRUTH Social marks the return of Trump to the world of social media after his accounts on mainstream social media platforms Twitter and Facebook were banned. Trump has been indefinitely banned from Twitter while his Facebook account has been disabled for two years, starting 2021.

Platforms such as Instagram and Reddit have also banned Trump. The reason is that it is widely believed that the former US President posted messages over social media that incited a riot in Washington's Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021.

This was after the 2020 Presidental elections in November when Democrat candidate Joe Biden had won against Trump.

In an announcement, Trump Media & Technology Group announced its intention behind building this app. TRUTH Social intends to 'fight back against Big Tech companies of Silicon Valley' for silencing opposing voices in the US.

In the same announcement, Trump also called himself 'favourite American President' and that the Group has been founded to provide a voice to all. The Group is being led by former Republican US Representative, Devin Nunes.

During Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures, Nunes said, "Honestly, it's just it's actually very moving for me to see people that are on the platform that have had their voice canceled—And that's our main goal here is to give people their voice back."

Nunes also added, "...which is the opposite of some Silicon Valley tech oligarch freak telling people what they want to think and deciding who can or cannot be on the platform. We're really taking just the opposite approach, which is valuing our customers."

Although not available in India, the app is said to look very similar to Twitter. The posts will be known as 'Truths' and would function in the same format as Tweets. The Truth will also have a reply, share and like button right underneath them and users will be able to follow trending topics. Basically, it is entirely like Twitter.

To say that the internet feels passionately towards the app would be an understatement. As with every Trump announcement, the internet is once again divided.
