Hosts India made a shock exit from the FIH Men's World Cup after losing to New Zealand in sudden death in their must-win crossover match on Sunday.

The loss in front of a 5000 home crowd in Bhubaneswar ended India's hopes of a World Cup medal after 48 years.

Poor defending

India allowed NZ to come back from two-goal deficit as the match ended at 3-3 in the regulation time. In the peanlty shootout, India lost 4-5.

2nd in group

India won its last Pool D match against Wales 4-2 and finished second in the group with seven points.

first crossover

This was the first time India had to play in a crossover fixture at the World Cup. In 2018, India had finished the group stage on top .

India's game versus England was a close affair but it ended in a goalless draw. It gave England the top spot.

Against England, India looked out of touch in the first half and made some silly mistakes. They fought back in the 2nd half but couldn't score a goal.

India's World Cup campaign got off to a winning start as they beat Spain 2-0 at the newly built Birsa Munda stadium in Rourkela.
