Sony World Photography Awards 2023 Winners

The Sony World Photography Awards 2023 has just announced its overall winners at a gala ceremony in London.

It is a renowned photography competition with a top prize of $25,000, open to all. It has been elevating photographers' careers for 16 years.

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR

Edgar Martins was named Photographer of the Year for 'Our War', which honours photojournalist Anton Hammerl, who died during the Libyan Civil War.

architecture and design

The award was won by Fan Li's Cement Factory. Now left barren, the Tieshan cement factory is located in Guilin City in South China.

Outstanding contribution

Outstanding Contribution to Photography was for 'Untitled', from the series Illuminance by Rinko Kawauchi. She is a renowned Japanese photographer.

documenntary projects

Winner: Hugh Kinsella Cunningha from UK, for his picture that shows a women's peace movement in Congo, a country that has seen nearly 2 decades of conflict.

wildlife and nature

Corey Arnold won the award  for his series 'Cities Gone Wild', in which he tracks black bears, coyotes and raccoons – that have survived human-built landscape.

Creative

'The Right To Play' by Lee-Ann Olwagn was conferred this award. Olwagn worked with girls from Kenya who have avoided FGM and child marriage.

sport

Winner: Al Bello (US), for the series Female Pro Baseball. The photos are of Kelsie Whitmore, 1st female professional baseball player to play in an all-male pro league.

still life

The Sky Garden series by Kechun Zhang won this award. The still captures 'Landscape Gardening', a practice dating back to ancient times.

envIronment

Marisol Mendez & Federico Kaplan from Japan won this award for their series Miruku which features Wayuus, an indigenous tribe from Colombia.
