Rai Bahadur Mohan Singh Oberoi was born on August 15, 1898 in erstwhile undivided Punjab, which is now in Pakistan.

Rai Bahadur Mohan Singh Oberoi came to Shimla and worked as the front desk clerk at the Cecil Hotel. Now, The Oberoi Group owns the hotel - The Oberoi Cecil.

In 1934, Oberoi acquired his first property, The Clarkes Hotel in Shimla, HP, from his mentor by mortgaging his wife's jewellery and all his assets.

Four years later, Oberoi signed a lease to take over operations of the 500 rooms Grand Hotel in Calcutta that was on sale because of a cholera epidemic.

Also referred to as the Grand Dame of Chowringhee, the 5-star The Oberoi Grand has been an icon on the landscape of Kolkata for more than a century.
