Everyone loved to hate Qandeel Baloch, Pakistan's most troubled internet star

The death of Pakistani celebrity Qandeel Baloch, or Fouzia Aneem, who was murdered by her brother following an argument, has brought into focus the spate of crimes against women in the country. According to Dawn, Baloch's brother Waseem would frequently threaten her against posting videos and pictures on social media.

The police said he strangled at her home in Multan, but the motive for the crime is still unknown. Qandeel's brothers had reportedly asked her quit modelling time and again. Only days before the murder, the internet star had claimed she had been receiving death threats and sought security.

However, the mainstream Pakistani media has termed it as an incident of "honour killing".

Hundreds of Pakistani women and girls are murdered every year by their relatives in the name of family honour. Most suspects in honour killings are never prosecuted.

Baloch was a social media rage in Pakistan and had gathered a wide Indian following for her controversial statements and videos.

Through her posts on popular public figures like Shahid Afridi, Imran Khan, Virat Kohli, Amitabh Bachchan, Qandeel became a much talked about celebrity in the Pakistan.

Most recently she made headlines after her former husband Ashiq Hussain appeared on national television and claimed the model was his wife and had had a child with him.

She acknowledged the fact citing the couple had separated after an abusive relationship. Qandeel revealed that she was married at 17 and the abusive union had ended in a year.

During the month of Ramzan, considered holy by Muslims, Qandeel had stirred up a storm with her selfies with cleric Mufti Qavi.

In the pictures, Qandeel seen posing with Mufti Qavi, wearing his cap. Following hte controversy, Qavi lost membership of a religious body (suspension from the moon sighting Ruet-e-Hilal committee).

The internet star recently launched a music video that sparked outrage and found as many takers as haters.

During the T20 World Cup, which was hosted by India in March 2016, Baloch had landed in her biggest controversy by promising to strip for Pakistan, particularly captain Shahid Afridi, if the team won the T20 match against India. She even slammed the skipper for the defeat.

Qandeel Baloch was recently summoned to a civil court in Pakistan over charges of bringing "shame" upon the Baloch race by adopting the surname. The 25-year-old model belonged to the tribal area of Shah Sadar Din in south Punjab, and had started her career as a bus hostess.

It is rumoured that Bigg Boss 10 was to have Qandeel Baloch as one of its top contestants. The more hatred she got, the more Qandeel's popularity grew. It is hard to forget the sensation that was Qandeel Baloch. May her soul rest in peace.
