11 silly things people are saying about Karva Chauth on Twitter

If you have grown up watching Dharma Production or Sooraj Barjatya movies, you are well aware of this tradition - but for those who don’t know, Karva Chauth is a Hindu festival, traditionally celebrated by married women.

Celebrated mostly in the north Indian states, Karva Chauth is basically a fast that women participate in, to pray for the health and long-life of their spouses. The fast starts at sunrise and is broken at moonrise. And the first bite is traditionally fed to the women by their husbands, or Shah Rukh Khan (if DDLJ is to be taken into account).

This fast, that includes not consuming even a single drop of water, is followed by feasting and other festivities. Needless to say, this Hindu tradition has received a lot of flak in recent years (mostly social media) for being regressive and patriarchal.

So, between outraging about the regressive tradition that forces women to stay hungry and popular culture romanticising it, here is some well-needed comic relief:
