Keep calm and listen to the Gandhi in our midst

This is the age of NOISE: In Parliament, on the street, even in television studios; being "noisy" is an enduring feature, especially of our public life.

In the cacophony, we tend to speak "at" each other rather than "to" each other. Which is why I was delighted when Gopal Krishna Gandhi agreed to come on my show this evening.

The topic was: How the Mahatma would have responded to the Dadri killing. Gopalji had only one condition: He didn't want to be part of a "tu tu main main" panel.

I readily agreed. To have the grandson of the Mahatma speak with knowledge and integrity was a privilege. It added up to something you rarely see on the TV screen: Wisdom. And no, he didn't raise his voice even once. It is a pity that his scholarship hasn't been used by our present government.

I wish someone would tell them that there is a Gandhi family that doesn't reside at 10 Janpath. By the way, Gandhi's views on cow slaughter are crystal clear: I am against cow slaughter, it is part of my religious beliefs, but it is not part of the beliefs of Indians from other religions. I can't use it to impose my belief on others because that would amount to coercion. Anyway, here is the interview.
