A Reliance Jio enthusiast's friendly advice

Those who have started using the Reliance Jio sim realise within a short while that you cannot make or receive calls unless you have your 4G Jio internet on and use jio.join.app.

This is applicable for those phones which are 4G-enabled but do not support 4G Voice over Long Term Evolution (VoLTE).

VoLTE is a standard for high speed wireless communication for mobile phones and data terminals. This approach results in voice service (control and media planes) being delivered as data flow within the LTE data-bearer.

VoLTE has up to three times more voice and data capacity than 3G UMTS and up to six times more than 2G GSM.

In case you have not been able to connect to the internet, it is because you are on Jio 4G internet (obversely, Jio.join.app does not work when you are using wifi or any other mode of internet).

It means, practically it is impossible for you to make or receive calls unless you keep the Jio.join.app open all the time for the same.

Given the rate at which continuous usage of Jio 4G internet is mandated for remaining in connectivity, your smartphone’s battery will drain off too soon, which is a big minus point.

For people using Jio sim only for calls post Dec 31, 2016, one internet user says you have to recharge your number with at least Rs 149, which is the minimum amount of the net pack offered for a month's validity along with 0.3 GB data.

Now if you are a calls-only user who speaks more than the amount of Rs 149 per month offers for making calls, Jio is a must for you - it is a boon, no doubt.

However, if you are more of an internet-only customer who surfs more and talks less, spending Rs 499 per month on just 4 GB seems too scanty and impractical.

Jio hotspot usage is excluded from the above in this instance because you have to have the Jio hotspot near where you live or at your work area; or else you won’t be able to make use of the facility.

Having said that, the user recommends getting a Jio sim and using it till the 31st of December 2016, if the service is worth spending Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 per month, or else switch back to your old service provider before the Jio welcome offer expiry date.
