Ask: Who benefits in UP for making an issue out of Kairana exodus?

Over the last few days, social media has been abuzz with reports of a Hindu exodus from Kairana, a small town in western UP.

The allegation has been made that the "pseudo secular" media is silent because Hindus are suffering. The truth is, as always, not so simple.

Since the Muzaffarnagar riots of 2013, the communal divide has deepened: territories/clusters are being divided on religious lines.

In Kairana itself, a local Muslim gangster is accused of spreading terror (the gang itself has Muslim and Hindu members). The BJP is now sending a fact finding team: after all, no one must be discriminated on grounds of religion. I couldn't agree more.

But I have two simple questions:

When Muslims were pushed into refugee camps after the Muzaffarnagar riots, where was the empathy?

And why is it that Kairana has become an issue only a few months ahead of the UP elections?

Who benefits from stirring a communal divide?

Think about it.

Here is my debate on the issue last night: not silent but asking questions that a journalist should.
