Nokia 6,5 and 3 launched: All you need to know

HMD Global's reboot of Nokia was at the centre of things at the Mobile World Congress earlier in 2017. The Finnish company's announcement of the reboot of the 3310 — the indestructible phone from the early 2000s that came with Snake installed — ended up seizing the limelight.

However, the most important takeaway from Nokia's booth at the event remained the news of it finally making the jump to the Android platform with Nokia 3,5 and 6. HMD Global – which bought the rights to sell Nokia-branded phones – announced them for the Indian market at a launch event in Delhi on June 13.

Pricing and availability

The first Nokia smartphones to be launched in India after the shutdown of the Lumia series are targeted towards budget users. Nokia, for its part, seems to have got the pricing right, with the Nokia 3 set to retail at Rs 9,499, and the Nokia 5 priced at Rs 12,899, while the most expensive in the list — the Nokia 6 — is set to come with a price tag of Rs 14,999.

The company also revealed the first two phones in the list will only be available through brick and mortar stores via 400 exclusive distributors covering 80,000 stores, while the top-of-the-line Nokia 6 will be an Amazon exclusive; registrations for the phone will begin on July 14, 2017.

Nokia 6

The top-of-the-line Nokia 6 will sport a 403 PPI 5.5-inch Full-HD IPS display with Corning Gorilla Glass protection. Under the hood, the phone will run Android 7.1.1 Nougat powered by Snapdragon 430 processor coupled with 3GB RAM. The handset will come with 32GB inbuilt storage, support microSD cards of up to 128GB, and house a 3000mAh battery and a fingerprint scanner underneath the display.

On the optics front, the Nokia 6 sports a 16MP rear sensor with f/2.0 aperture and phase detection autofocus, while the front camera sports an 8MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture. It also comes with a stereo speaker grille powered by Dolby Atmos technology.

In terms of connectivity, the phone supports WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1, USB on-the-go and is also 4G-ready.

Nokia 5

Second in the list is the Nokia 5, which, to be honest, is a scaled-down smaller version of the beefier Nokia 6. The phone comes equipped with a 720p 5.2-inch IPS display with a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass on top. The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 430 processor paired with 2GB of RAM. There's a 13MP sensor on the back and an 8MP selfie camera in the front. It comes packing 16GB inbuilt storage which can be expanded up to 128GB via microSD card. The phone is powered by a 3000mAh battery.

Much like the Nokia 6 it supports WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1, USB on-the-go and is also 4G ready.

Nokia 3

The most budget-friendly option in the list, the Nokia 3 will look to make a splash in the highly-contested sub-10,000 segment of the Android smartphone market. The phone comes with premium exteriors and is targeted at users who want a phone that is light on the pocket, but heavy on looks.

The phone comes with a metallic frame sandwiched between a polycarbonate body. It features a 5-inch HD display powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek 6737 SoC paired with 2GB of RAM. There is 16GB storage on board that can be expanded to 128GB using a microSD card. The phone packs 8MP cameras at the front and the back and gets its juice from a 2650 mAh battery.

Will Nokia's Android experiment be a hit?

For years Nokia remained a brand that captivated the imagination of millions of budget users in the country. But its spell was broken after it failed to join the Android revolution. The failure of the Lumia series plunged the brand's appeal to an all-time low.

With its glory days behind, HMD-powered Nokia is now looking to use the nostalgic appeal of the brand to make a successful splash in the Android phone market.

But nostalgia aside, the new phones have a lot more going on for them. For starters, Nokia has got its pricing right with the three phones spread in the affordable Rs 9,499-Rs 14,999 range. The smartphones also come with decent specs, which will surely give budget offerings by established brands like Samsung, LG and Sony a good run for their money.

But from what it looks like, Nokia's biggest test will be against newer Chinese entrants like Xiaomi and Vivo.

However, if initial reactions are anything to go by, the brand's nostalgic value, coupled with good value-for-money phones and a strong after-sales machinery should help the the brand win the bout against the new players in the market.
