The good, bad and ugly things about iPhone 7

Yes, it's that time of the year.

Apple has launched new iPhones, predictably called iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus.

In India these will reach on October 7 and we will have a more through look at them when they hit the markets.

But at first glance, these phones look remarkably solid. No wow factor, but good upgrades to the existing iPhones.

In recent months, Android phones like Galaxy S7 and HTC 10 had taken a lead over the iPhone in many aspects. The iPhone 7 fixes it.

It is an incremental update to the iPhone 6S. But there are enough tweaks to make it appealing to anyone willing to spend Rs 60,000 on a phone.

The new features that the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus get are useful. Just like the Galaxy S7, the new iPhones have waterproof bodies. This is a big convenience.

Most people don't realise it how useful it is to have a waterproof phone until they use one. Then, there is the bump in the storage from 16GB, which was pathetic, to a more respectable 32GB.

Although even 32GB is not enough in this age of "WhatsApp forwards" and "baby videos", the extra storage means the phone will take at least six-seven more months before it shows the dreaded "phone storage full" warning.

Under the hood too there are changes. The iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus are faster due to the A10 Fusion processor.

The existing iPhones too are fast so you won't notice much of change while using the phones.

The new hardware is more of Apple's way to make the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus future-proof. The camera in the iPhone 7 now has a brighter (F1.8) lens so expect better images in low light.

The iPhone 7 Plus has two rear cameras and few extra tricks up its sleeve, but results will be similar - better images in low light.

Finally, there is the curious case of the 3.5mm headphone jack, which Apple has removed from the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus.

Politics and business of this move aside, it won't impact users because, at least for now, Apple is bundling an adapter that will make existing headphones work with the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus.

There is nothing flashy about the iPhone 7 - except the jet black colour - and no big changes in design.

But the iPhone 7 is built to offer consumers fuss-free experience and that is all that matters.
