Sunny Leone being trolled for adopting a child is shameful

Parenthood is a wonderful thing, adoption more so.

But how do you tell this to people who are obsessed with "breeding" children at the cost of politicising the womb, impregnating poor women with the idea that it's fine to sacrifice your body for money (read commercial surrogacy). For Indians happily exploiting women's womb, outsourcing pregnancy is a great idea but adoption is the last choice of most childless couples.

So, when a Sunny Leone does that (the actor and her husband Daniel Weber adopted a 21-month-old girl from Latur in Maharashtra), prejudiced Indians instead of congratulating the couple, started frothing at their mouths.

And what better way than character assassination. Suddenly everybody seems to have a problem with the fact that Sunny Leone, who once used to act in adult films, has adopted a child. Malicious netizens started digging into her past to justify the filth present in their minds.

First of all, Indians need to get over the fact that Sunny Leone was once an actor in the adult film industry. She is no longer, for all intents and purposes, a porn star. Nor is she ashamed of ever having been one. But Indians will always be judgemental. For us, being an adult entertainment actress is the same as being a prostitute, which in turn is equated to her supposed lack of decency and character.

Leone and her husband though seem to be brimming with joy, like any other new parents. "Right now, it's all so brand new because it has just been a few days. The moment we got the picture [of Nisha]; I was so excited, happy, emotional and [experienced] so many different feelings. We literally had three weeks to finalise everything. Usually, people get nine months to prepare!"

Weber added, "Our life is always so crazy. There are no nine months for us. For me, it has just been lots of paperwork for two years and then one day, that's it. You get an email that you have been matched with a child. It's so crazy."

And if Leone and Weber are happy with their decision, why should anyone have a reason to complain? Well, Indians can take offence at anything anyone does; no matter how unrelated it is to their own lives. And that’s what is happening.

A surprising number of vile comments came from women which only go to show just how ingrained patriarchy is.

Sunny Leone’s professional choices have absolutely nothing to do with her maternal qualities. But for some reason the holier-than-thou Indians seem to think that just because she used to be a porn star, her child too may lead an “undignified life”, whatever that means.

We are a disgusting lot, and we need to be ashamed of the things that we say.
