Salman Khan is right, blackbuck died of natural causes, like the footpath people

Bollywood actor Salman Khan has once again given the country a reason to cringe, but this time it’s not one of his movies or his oddly robotic dance steps. On Friday, January 27, Khan said at the Jodhpur court hearing about the blackbuck poaching case, said that the animal in question - that he has been accused of killing - died of natural causes.

Yes. Of course the blackbuck died of natural causes. Just like the Indian currency demonetised itself.

According to the The Times of India, Salman said, "Only the first forensic report of Dr Nepalia saying that the animal died of 'natural causes' was true and the rest of the evidence is false."

Salman Khan has, over the years, faced four cases over the years linked to the killing of two blackbucks and two chinkara while filming the 1998 movie Hum Saath Saath Hain.

According to Khan’s testimony, he wasn’t present at the alleged hunt; he said had returned to his hotel room straight after the shoot and did not go out at night for security reasons.

According to an NDTV report, Khan was asked 65 questions by the prosecution, based on statements from 28 witnesses. On being told by the chief judicial magistrate Dalpat Singh Rajpurohit that Khan was seen by two people who said they saw him shoot the blackbuck, the actor reportedly said, "galat".

Khan’s track-record for getting into trouble and sliding out of the clutches of the legal system is disturbing, to say the least. Last year, the Rajasthan High Court had acquitted the actor in two cases related to the hunting of chinkara deer. On January 18, Jodhpur sessions court acquitted Khan in an over 18-year-old Arms Act case.

All this, including the verdict of the actor’s notorious hit-and-run case, perhaps it is time to consider whether Salman Khan breaking the law is not just legal, but also natural. Maybe the blackbuck did die of natural causes then.

Twitter’s reaction to Khan’s statement was one that was completely justified: incredulity at the sheer gall of Bollywood’s “Human”.
