Is Jayalalithaa ruling Tamil Nadu from beyond the grave?

Can we hear voices from beyond the grave? Receive thoughts?

Maybe...

Perhaps that is what OPS (O Panneerselvam) meant when he emerged from a nearly 40-minute-long meditation in front of J Jayalalithaa’s burial site and told the press that the dead leader communicated with him.

Communicating with spirits has always been one of the most controversial subjects of all time.

In the West, when Thomas Edison was working on a "spirit phone" which would help one communicate with the other side, eyebrows were raised within the scientific community.

Communicating with spirits has always been one of the most controversial subjects of all time.

In recent years, scientists from Berlin have validated that consciousness exists after physical death.

In the UK, the University of Southampton has broken new ground on this too.

But when we come closer home and think of it, it is possible that the essence of Jayalalithaa, which we would call her spirit, lingers and speaks to her people?

After all, she was a woman of indomitable strength and iron will. A woman who rose through grit and determination and was adored by her people. Is it possible that even after death, the strength of her will makes it possible for her to communicate with the living?

This would not be the first time in history this has happened.

Canada’s longest-serving prime minister Mackenzie King has been sighted even years after his death both at his Ottawa home and his Quebec estate.

Ghana’s former president John Mills, who died suddenly some years ago, was said to be haunting members of the National Democratic Congress there. Mills had died in 2012, and even four years after his death, some members of the NDC said they could feel his angry presence around them.

And what of rituals and rites and occult practices. Do they play a part?

Over the years, many reports involving politicians with black magic and tantric rites have emerged from Tamil Nadu. Many reports said Sasikala had employed a tantric from Kerala to perform continuous rites and rituals and look after her interests.

The rumours about Jayalalithaa performing animal sacrifices and rites got so rampant that around the year 2000, she categorically spoke to the media denying it. Rival DMK leader names have equally been linked with various dark rites, every now and then.

Even if a politician had dabbled in black magic, would that give him or her, a special ability to reach out from behind the veil and speak?

While occult practices may raise certain forces around one, I feel it is more the strength of the person and the power of the will, which gives the spirit a living force.

And now in Tamil Nadu, just as the dust from the succession battle seemed to be settling down with Sasikala becoming more visible, and OPS taking the helm as CM, a fresh battle suddenly erupted after Sasikala came forward to claim the throne.

Is Jayalalithaa’s spirit restless and disturbed, as she watches the foundations of the empire she built crumble?

Does she seek to find a way to speak to the people she led? Can she rule from beyond the grave?
