Best and worst dressed stars at Oscars red carpet

The fashion police had a field day at the 89th Academy Awards ceremony as stars dressed up (and down) for the Oscars red carpet.

The Roaring Twenties was the unspoken theme of the show, with winsome beauties shimmering in beads and tassel from top to bottom. The list of stars who didn’t make the style charts was longer this year than those who won our hearts, and here is the definitive list of the best and worst dressed of the night.

Leading lady

When you’re going to win the award for Best Actress, unbeknown of course, you dress the part. Emma Stone was a vision in her flapper gown by Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci, with the nude-gold hue giving her a feminine and dressy appeal. The brick red lip inspired by a Gustav Klimt painting, side parted shoulder-length waves from the ’40s, and sharp jewellery from Tiffany & Co. were all that the vintage-glam look needed for winning points.

On a winning streak

Brie Larson won the Oscar for Best Actress last year, and she continued the good run in a ruffled velvet gown by Oscar de la Renta. The beautifully crafted dress was enough to flaunt her figure, but the final touches of a wispy up do, a bright red lipper, strappy sandals by Aquazzura and Neil Lane diamonds completed her look wonderfully.

Sari on fleek

Dev Patel’s mom, Anita Patel stole the limelight in the black sari with its golden pleats and beadwork. Let’s be clear – it’s not because of the novelty factor in an American award environment. Mrs Patel looked graceful in the ensemble, styled with a plain black clutch and nude lipstick. No wonder that the internet exploded for all the right reasons.

Shape shifter

I’m on the fence about Priyanka Chopra’s Ralph & Russo dress, that frankly resembles Marjorie Tyrell’s popcorn dress from Game of Thrones. The stiff, sharp torso and the shapely figure are wonderfully modern, and yet the Lorraine Schwartz diamond cuffs on both wrists distract one from its unusual beauty. Her hair is well in place, but the overall look could have been styled better.

Proportion Control

For a face that is as petite as Charlize Theron’s, accentuated by her quiff, this Christian Dior dress seems too wide on her body. While everyone doesn’t have to resemble the Oscar trophy itself, playing with the body type would have made for a more elegant appeal, which is what she seems to be going for.

Tribal calling

Jessica Beil looks like she is dressed as the queen of a tribal song video, in this Kaufman Franco golden dress and that tassel collar. Why, oh why she would do this to herself, one will never know, but a second glance in the mirror before heading out would have saved everyone the sartorial confusion.

Disco deewane

The 1970s curls, check. Soft dewy make-up, check. The mish-mash of a dress by Atelier Versace – we don’t know how to respond. Maybe it’s the extra tassel on the hemline, or the knotted fabric on the torso. At least Halle Berry looks hot as hell at the age of 50. What else do you need?

Trying too hard

I can literally hear the tune played for a wind-up doll as it dances in a mechanical way when I look at Janelle Monae's gown. The Elie Saab Haute Couture dress is a visual overdose of embroidery and fabric, and the chunky collar necklace is doing no good either. Monae is a hugely talented musician and actress, and her stylist needs to match up.

Hot starter

The oomph that Taraji P Henson exudes in this off-shoulder Alberta Ferretti gown is the kind of stuff that red carpets are made for. Her hair falls stylishly on her face from one side, while it is sprayed in place on the other. The cleavage and thigh slit are on-point and the simple sandals and clutch bag are tasteful. She could have worn a different necklace from Nirav Modi, but Henson still made it work.

Bad service

The lovely Dakota Johnson wore a Gucci gown that looked like it came with a gold apron attached to it. The dress looked frumpy on the 27-year-old actress, who otherwise has such a fresh face and appeal. The plain hairstyle and simple make-up didn’t help in this case either.
