প্রতিরক্ষামন্ত্রী থাকার সময়ও খেয়ে উঠে নিজের থালা নিজেই মেজে রাখতেন। যে খদ্দরের পাঞ্জাবী ও পাজামা তিনি পরতেন, সেগুলি তিনি নিজেই কাচতেন – এতটাই সহজ-সরল ছিল তাঁর জীবনযাত্রা। কংগ্রসের নামী নেতা এসকে পাটিলকে হারিয়ে ১৯৬৭ সালে তিনি সাংসদ হন। শ্রমিকনেতা জর্জ ফার্নান্ডেজের নেতৃত্বে ১৯৭৪ সালে ২০ দিন ধরে চলা রেল ধর্মঘট কার্যত সারা দেশকে থমকে দিয়েছিল।

দেশে জরুরি অবস্থার সময় রেলের লাইন উড়িয়ে দেওয়ার ছক কষার অভিযোগে (যদিও শোনা যায় এটি সাজানো মামলা) তাঁকে গ্রেফতার করা হয়েছিল। বরোদা মামলা নামে সেই মামলায় ধৃত জর্জ ফার্নান্ডেজ কারাবন্দি অবস্থায় মুজফফরপুর থেকে লড়ে বিজয়ী হন। পরে বিভিন্ন সময় তিনি রেলমন্ত্রী ও প্রতিরক্ষামন্ত্রীর দায়িত্ব সামলেছেন।
জরুরি অবস্থার সময়ে গ্রেফতারি এড়াতে শিখদের মতো সাজপোশাক করতেন, যদিও শেষ পর্যন্ত তাঁকে গ্রেফতার করা হয় বরোদা মামলায়। সেনাদের স্বার্থ দেখা শুরু হয় নাকি তাঁর আমল থেকেই। সেই জর্জ ফার্নান্ডেজ প্রয়াত।

Very sad to hear about George Fernandes’ demise. He was a very good friend in his later years. Earlier we had ideological. differences due to his being socialist and I for market based economy but we were united in opposing TDK and residual Nehru family.
