Supermodel and Johnny Depp’s ex-girlfriend, Kate Moss, testified on May 25 in his and Amber Heard’s ongoing US $50 million defamation trial.
WHY WAS MOSS CALLED: The supermodel was called to testify because of Heard’s testimony. During her testimony, Heard mentioned that she thought of ‘Kate Moss and the stairs’ in a fight with Depp, involving Heard's sister Whitney.
Kate Moss and Johnny Depp dated from 1994 to 1997. During this time, in September 1994, Depp and Moss got into a fight at New York's Mark Hotel, when Moss accused him of cheating on her.
The NYC Police arrived at the scene and Depp was arrested for trashing his hotel room. He was charged with 'criminal mischief' and asked to stay out of trouble for 6 months by a criminal court judge. Depp paid around US $10,000 in damages, and the charges were dropped. (Read more here: Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial: What is the Kate Moss staircase incident)
This incident led to rumours that Depp had pushed Moss down a flight of stairs; the same rumours that Heard referred to during the hearing.
WHAT DID MOSS SAY: Moss gave her testimony through a live video link from her mansion in Gloucestershire, UK. The supermodel was seen in a black jacket and white blouse.
Moss primarily clarified that the alleged incident occurred in a resort in Jamaica when the couple was vacationing.
Talking about the staircase incident, Moss said, “We were leaving the room and Johnny left the room before I did. There had been a rainstorm. As I left the room, I slid down the stairs and I hurt my back. I screamed because I didn't know what happened to me and I was in pain. He came running back to help me and carried me to my room and got me medical attention.”
Moss clarified that Depp had never pushed, kicked or thrown her down a flight of stairs.
She was not cross-examined by Heard’s legal team.
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's defamation trial is expected to end on May 27, with attorneys from both sides filing their closing statements on the day.
