Lady Gaga might play Harley Quinn in Joker 2: Netizens call it a cultural reset
Harley Quinn is every girl’s go-to character costume for a Halloween party. Other than the comics, we have only seen actor Margot Robbie bring the character to life on the big screen. There is only so little to learn from to imitate one of the most recognisable pop-culture sensations – that’s also crazy.
But now, the wind is changing. The beloved and crazy character will likely be played by the one and the only – Lady Gaga in Joker’s sequel Joker: Folie à Deux or Joker 2.
The news: The Hollywood Reporter is saying that pop sensation Lady Gaga is in talks with the makers of Joker 2 to play Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix, who is set to reprise his character in the sequel. Moreover, the sequel is rumoured to be a musical. Digest that – Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn in a musical Joker sequel.
There’s only very little information on this front for now. But fans of the DC Universe are both excited and unenthusiastic about Lady Gaga’s casting.
What’s the big deal? Margot Robbie has been the only actor to have portrayed Harley Quinn on the big screen. The character appeared for the first time ever in a movie in 2016’s Suicide Squad. Then, Robbie reprised her role in its sequel The Suicide Squad in 2020. She also played the lead in Birds of Prey also released in 2020.
The Hollywood Reporter also said that Gaga’s Harley Quinn will exist in a different DC Universe than Robbie’s Harley Quinn.
So for Robbie fans, it is hard to imagine anyone else playing the iconic role. Margot Robbie defined the popular marquee character as a happily deranged woman with a love for bright colours, who loves to create mischief.
But there are others who are all in for Lady Gaga to be cast as Harley Quinn. Some say that if multiple actors can play the role of Batman, even Joker, then for sure Harley Quinn can also be played by various actors.
Others are more excited about a “cultural reset” that Lady Gaga will bring to the character. Since only Margot Robbie has played the character so far, fans are excited to see how the character will look like if played by a different actor.
However, one of the biggest pulls for the audience is not because of different actors playing the same character or for cultural reset. The biggest pull is that Lady Gaga’s off-screen persona is very much like that of Harley Quinn, minus the murderous craziness (of course).
Who is Harley Quinn? Harley Quinn or Dr Harleen Quinzel is a character in the Batman story. She plays Batman’s enemy Joker’s love interest and sidekick, making trouble for the superhero.
Dr Harleen Quinzel meets Joker as his psychiatrist when he is seeking treatment at Gotham city’s Arkham Asylum and eventually goes crazy herself after falling in love with Joker.
In Joker 2, the title Folie à Deux, also references a psychiatric syndrome where two people share the same psychosis. The title is said to define Quinn’s character and place in the movie.
But before you are all too excited… Lady Gaga’s role is not yet confirmed, and reports say Joaquin Phoneix’s role as Joker is also not yet confirmed.
