This summer has been a bittersweet time for binge-watchers as many popular series have come to a close. The culmination of shows like Succession, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel and Ted Lasso has left a void in the hearts of fans and triggered a sense of despair at the prospects of moving on and letting go.
It goes without saying at this point, the remarkably profound impact that Succession had on its viewers. With four outstanding seasons, numerous accolades, and an emotionally charged 90-minute finale, the show delivered on the expectations of its dedicated fan base. The drama, intimacy, and Nicholas Britell's gorgeous music, all contributed to a satisfying conclusion. Yet, despite the fulfillment of narrative arcs and the announcement of a successor, the show's ending has left many feeling bereft.

For devoted followers, Succession had become an integral part of their weekly routine, occupying the collective consciousness of post-work Monday evenings (or even during, depending on how desperate one was). The show's popularity, particularly in India with the whole Hotstar debacle, further amplified the collective sense of loss. Fans now find themselves at a loss, uncertain how to fill the void left by the HBO series.
Even the actors who brought these characters to life are not immune to the mournful aftermath. Kieran Culkin, who portrayed Roman Roy on the show, discussed the potential emotional impact of the show's conclusion. In an episode of First We Feast’s Hot Ones, he mentioned that he hadn't yet fully processed the end of the series but anticipated experiencing feelings akin to depression. His sentiments echo those of us all, who mourn the conclusion of a show that had become such a significant part of our lives.
Saying goodbye to a beloved series, whether or not you were an avid viewer of Jesse Armstrong’s masterpiece, evokes a similar feeling of emptiness. We all understand the pain of bidding farewell to fictional worlds and characters we have grown attached to and the very same feeling of melancholy is often referred to as post-series depression (PSD), or in this case, post-Succession depression - an ailment that half the planet seems to be diagnosed with at the moment.
One way to alleviate this Big Sad™ however, is to embark on a new television journey, which of course is easier said than done. Exploring other shows can provide a temporary distraction and fill the void left by the previous series. But let’s be honest here, Never Have I Ever could never.
For those who experience intense post-series depression, the emotional impact can linger for weeks. Popular Science suggests that individuals who struggle with anxiety, depression, and loneliness may be more prone to developing stronger attachments to fictional characters.
The conclusion of a series as beloved as Succession has the potential to leave fans feeling disheartened and longing for more. While the melancholy may persist for a while, it's crucial to remember that these emotions are a testament to the show's impact.
By exploring new series (or at least trying to do so) the post-series depression will most certainly alleviate. For now, here are some upcoming series dropping soon that while may not stand up to the greatness of the likes of Succession, will definitely keep you occupied and invested enough to get over it:
