KL Rahul's ODI comeback and knock against Australia show how important he is for India

KL Rahul's unbeaten innings of 97 off 115 balls against Australia during India's World Cup opener stands out as one of the finest performances of his ODI career. Alongside Virat Kohli, who contributed 85 runs (116 balls), the duo made a formidable partnership of 165 runs (215 balls), effectively thwarting Australia's hopes of making a comeback at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium.

However, the journey did not begin as fans had hoped. Spectators were in for a rude awakening when the top three batters (Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Shreyas Iyer) were dismissed for ducks, leaving India at 2/3.

It appeared that the Indian batters might not even reach the 100-run mark. Nonetheless, KL Rahul, coming in at number 5, drew upon his experience and skill to rescue the team from a precarious situation, ensuring a victorious outcome. India comfortably chased down 200 runs in 41.4 overs, handing Australia one of their most significant defeats in World Cup history.

An unexpected injury

  • KL Rahul's return to the Indian team and his resurgence in form are nothing short of a blessing.

  • The 31-year-old cricketer had suffered a hamstring injury during an IPL match against Royal Challengers Bangalore in May 2023, necessitating surgery on his right thigh.

  • He underwent rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and was sidelined from the Indian team, leading to concerns that he might be out of action for an extended period. However, KL Rahul made a swift recovery and was ready for selection.

  • Nevertheless, just days before the selection for the Asia Cup squad, he suffered another injury, forcing him to miss the first two games.

  • Despite this setback, he was reevaluated on September 4 and subsequently cleared to join the Indian team in Kandy, Sri Lanka, for the remainder of the Asia Cup.

The return

  • KL Rahul has been in outstanding form since his return from injury. He kicked off with a brilliant 111* run knock against Pakistan, guiding the team to a total of 356 runs against their arch-rivals.

  • He carried his form into the three-match ODI series against Australia, where he notched up two half-centuries in the first two matches. The best was yet to come on Sunday, October 8, 2023.

  • He displayed remarkable composure at a crucial juncture, a trait even the best in the business sometimes struggle with.

  • Alongside Virat Kohli, KL Rahul efficiently rotated the strike and occasionally found the boundaries. Together, they secured a remarkable victory over the formidable Australian team, which has historically held a 75% success rate against India in World Cup matches.

  • Since his ODI debut in 2016, KL Rahul has played 62 ODI games and amassed 2388 runs at an impressive average of 49.75. Beyond his prowess as a prolific batter, KL Rahul has proven his mettle as a skilled wicketkeeper. Undoubtedly, he is a highly gifted cricketer in India's next generation of talent.
