10 years ago, on May 13, 2012, the final day of the English Premier League, Manchester City fans were all set to celebrate their first league title in 44 years.
They needed a win in their last game against Queens Park Rangers (QPR), a side battling to avoid relegation. But, in a dramatic turn of events, QPR took a two-goal lead while City's archivals Manchester United were leading in their game and were almost ready to rob City of the most prestigious football trophy in England.
Then City made a stunning comeback in the dying moments of the game and scored an equaliser during the injury time. They still needed one more goal and the full-time whistle was to be blown anytime. But then, City striker Sergio Aguero, in a moment of brilliance, produced a winner and made City the champions and the match was etched as one of the most iconic football games ever.
10 years later, it was Deja Vu for City fans. Liverpool were just one point behind City and if they won on the last day and City lost the game or were held to a draw, they would clinch the title by a point. That was highly unlikely, as City were facing Aston Villa, who were struggling at 14th place in the points table.
A 37th-minute goal and another one in the 69th minute had put Villa 2-0 up against City. The fans were distraught and the City players were panicked. Liverpool were sensing the title. But just like 2012, City produced another stunning comeback. This time they scored three goals in five minutes to win the game 3-2 and successfully defend the title by a single point.
Germany’s Ilkay Gundogan scored in the 76th minute, Spaniard Rodri equalised in the 78th minute and then Gundogan scored again in the 81st minute to take City to victory.
City have now won four of the last five Premier League titles and this is their sixth league title overall. They are now only behind Manchester United who have won 13 titles.
While Liverpool finished second, Chelsea ended their campaign at third place and Tottenham Hotspur comfortably secured the fourth Champions League spot with a 5-0 win over Norwich City.
Arsenal had to settle for fifth spot and Manchester United finished at sixth place after a forgettable season.
At the bottom, Burnley joined Watford and Norwich as they were relegated to the second-tier Championship.
