Paps call Tom Holland 'Makdi Man' at Ambani fest, then the wrong Tom Holland gets a taste of Desi Twitter

Despite sharing the same name as Marvel’s Spider-Man actor, Londoner Tom Holland has amassed quite the following on Twitter with more than 287k followers. This “other Tom Holland” is actually a historian who has extensively written on Christianity.

But following the actor Tom Holland’s appearance at the star-studded launch of the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in Mumbai over the weekend, the historian is being bothered by being tagged on Twitter by endless media outlets and paparazzi websites.

Why did Indians tag the wrong Tom Holland?

Fun fact: Tom Holland the actor isn’t on Twitter (although he has a considerable Instagram following). So, without doing much research, Indians ended up tagging the one blue tick account they could find with the username “@holland_tom”.

On his Twitter bio, Holland has clearly mentioned that he is the writer of a Christianity-centric history book called Dominion along with being a "dinosaur lover" and "Stonhenge tunnel hater". He has also tagged his history podcast called Rest of History.

And yet, he continued to be tagged by Desi Twitter in all images featuring the Spider-Man actor with the Ambanis and Indian stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. Who even reads Twitter bios? This incident proves it!

Since the last two days, the historian has been flooded with tags and mentions on the NMACC event, with Holland expressing his irritation on the microblogging platform.

When an Indian Twitter user laughed on the mess and apologised to the historian on behalf of his countrymen, Holland just tweeted:

“It seems like I have the whole of India in my timeline!”

Another Twitter user (still thinking that the historian is Zendaya’s boyfriend) asked him, “This is a great photo, confused though, what do you want to stop?”

To this, the historian could only sigh again.

“Where to begin?”

Some other Indians joked on how Indians bothering a British man is “reverse colonialism” while others advised him to unsubscribe from his blue tick status. One Twitter user even ended up calling the whole fiasco this Holland’s “homecoming”!

How did the actor Tom Holland get treated though?

Over the weekend, not only have the stars at NMACC dominated the spotlight but even the Indian paparazzos had their moment to shine. From remarking “Jijaji sharma gaye (Brother-in-law is blushing)” for an embarrassed Nick Jonas to calling Zendaya “Jhen-Daya”, the photographers provided viral meme fodder.

Tom Holland, who is already treated like a kid in the Marvel movies due to his boyish looks, was being treated like quite the “chhotu” in Mumbai too. As he arrived at the airport and later at the NMACC inauguration, the paps called him everything from “Tom Homecoming” to “Makdi Man” and “Tommy” (even howling out Tommy like it’s a dog name).

Holland was one of the international icons invited by the Ambanis for their grand gala, the others being Euphoria actress and Holland’s girlfriend Zendaya (who had her own pap moment with the photogs screaming, "Jhen-daya look this mobile"), Oscar-winner Penelope Cruz, and supermodel Gigi Hadid. While Hadid and Zendaya arrived in saris, Holland was dressed in a simple black-and-white tux crushing all hopes for him arriving in a Spider-Man kurta! Maybe at the next Ambani bash...
