Cause of the accident

  • Reportedly, hydraulic fluid leaked onto the hot plate near the engine of the crane causing the fire.
That crane operator saw that the fire started and tried to extinguish it. So we give a lot of credit to the crane operator. But the fire overwhelmed that operator and had to exit the crane.
- New York First Deputy Commissioner Joseph W. Pfeifer
  • New York City Mayor Eric Adams also reacted to the incident by saying,
This could have been much worse...
  • Construction workers in the building also escaped unhurt.
  • Officials checked the permits for the construction and the use of crane and found it to be up to date.
