Indian student stabbed in US gym dies after 10 days in hospital

Varun Raj Pucha, the 24-year-old Indian student, who was stabbed in a gym in the United States has succumbed to the injuries, reported the Press Trust of India.

The Computer Science student at Valparaiso University in Indiana (USA) had sustained injuries after the assailant stabbed him with a knife because he found him to be "a little weird". The incident happened at a public gym on October 29, when Varun was attacked by Jordan Andrade, a 24-year-old assailant.

Andrade, the assailant, now faces serious charges in connection to the incident.

University informs

• Valparaiso University took to X (formerly Twitter) to express its sorrow in a statement, saying, "It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Varun Raj Pucha.
• Our campus community has lost one of its own, and our thoughts and prayers go out to Varun’s family and friends as we mourn this devastating loss.

• This loss has deeply affected both the academic institution and Varun's loved ones, the post added.

The attack

• The incident unfolded when Varun was stabbed in the head with a knife by Jordan Andrade at a public gym in Valparaiso, Indiana.
• The reasons behind this horrifying act are still under investigation, leaving many unanswered questions about the motive.
• However, according to initial media reports, Andrade found Varun "a little weird."

As per reports, he was given a prognosis of "a zero to five per cent chance of survival" after the attack. Varun's condition remained critical as he fought for his life in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Actions taken

• Following the brutal assault, law enforcement apprehended Andrade, who is now facing charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and attempted murder.
• The severity of the attack is evident from the fact that Varun had to be transported to a Fort Wayne hospital due to the grave nature of his injuries.
• According to the police report, Andrade mentioned that he had requested a massage at the gym that morning.
• Upon entering the massage room, he encountered Varun, whom he described as "a little weird."
• Andrade claimed that he believed Varun posed a threat, which prompted him to react forcefully, the Police noted.
