The creepy Omegle is finally dead and its creator is relieved

Omegle, the chat roulette-style platform that brought strangers together for anonymous conversations is no more. The founder, Leif K-Brooks, dropped the bombshell, and it's not because he got tired of the party, but because things got way too creepy and problematic.

Omegle, the once-popular online chat platform, has officially closed its virtual doors after 14 years of connecting users with random strangers for anonymous conversations.

Omegle's closure announcement was accompanied by a poignant image of its logo engraved on a gravestone, symbolising the end of an era in online communication. 

In a statement, K-Brooks expressed that the website was "no longer sustainable, financially nor psychologically," highlighting the toll it had taken on both him and the platform.

History of controversies

This decision coincides with growing scrutiny of social media platforms by regulators around the world. 

• Remember that American girl who accused the platform of hooking her up with a creep when she was a minor?
• The lawsuit came a whole decade later, in November 2021; with Omegle's legal team, of course, claiming they weren't to blame, and they insisted their site wasn't a playground for predators.

In a moment of brutal honesty, K-Brooks admitted that some folks did some seriously messed up stuff on Omegle, including "unspeakably heinous crimes". He also pointed out that the platform had to deal with constant attacks from a mean bunch of creepy users so it comes as no surprise that he threw in the towel.

Omegle had its fair share of run-ins with the law too. 

• It was mentioned in over 50 cases involving questionable people in the UK, US, and Australia.
• TikTok even banned sharing links to Omegle after a BBC investigation found kids indulging in inappropriate activities on the platform.

The good

The farewell to Omegle wasn't all dismal, though. 

Social media lit up with users sharing their favourite memories. Some were shocked, and some were just feeling nostalgic about the good old days of random online chats.

K-Brooks also emphasised the positive impact of Omegle. He noted that the platform had helped people connect with different cultures, seek advice, and alleviate loneliness.
