After banning beef in Maharashtra, the BJP-led Mira Bhainder Municipal Corporation has banned the sale of meat and ordered abattoirs to be closed during the Jain fasting period this month. The corporation has put the ban to observe "Paryushan Parv"- the fasting period of Jains.

The decision was taken through a resolution passed by the general body of the corporation on Friday to ban the sale of meat and closure of abattoirs during 'Paryushan'  period from September 11-18.

"We do not want to hurt sentiments of any community, this decision has been taken by the general body," said Mayor Geeta Jain.

This decision has stirred up a controversy in Maharashtra with political parties upping the ante against the BJP.

Not only the Shiv Sena, other parties too have jumped into the controversy. While the NCP is calling it an RSS agenda, the MNS is referring to it as an injustice to the non-vegetarian loving Marathi Manoos. Read more here.
