Since when did saving all Hindus become Modi's priority?

Post May 16, 2014, the euphoria amongst fringe Hindu groups in India has been at an all time high. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the messiah of Hinduism according to them, has given them hope that Ram temple would be built and their dream of India becoming a Hindu Rashtra will be fulfilled soon.

In the past one year, fringe Hindu groups have placed various demands in front of the BJP, which range from stripping Muslims of their voting rights to banning jeans for women. They have also requested Modi to raise the plight of Hindus in India's neighbouring countries, where they are treated badly and live in constant fear.

During Modi's recent trip to Bangladesh, the country's Hindu community said that they live in constant fear of persecution in the Islamic nation and requested him to raise the issue with the Bangladeshi leadership. Rana Dasgupta, general secretary of Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, said, "We feel Narendra Modi, being the prime minister of India, should send out a strong message to the fundamental forces of Bangladesh that attack on minorities will not be tolerated." There has been an increase in attacks on minorities in Bangladesh, especially the horrific massacre of bloggers which stunned the nation.

Even the RSS mentioned that they would request Modi to take up the issue during his visit.

Unfortunately, Modi never raised the issue and according to the Telegraph, he ignored meeting Hindus and raising their issues to avoid controversies and communal tensions.

Even though BJP has granted citizenship to Sikhs and Hindus who fled Pakistan and Afghanistan to take refuge in India, it has never specifically spoken about the plight of Hindus in those countries or directly taken up with their respective governments. By April 2015, the BJP government granted citizenship to 4,230 Hindus and Sikhs from these two countries as compared with 1,023 granted by the UPA II government. But the question arises that is protecting every Hindu, regardless their country of residence, India's responsibility, just because Hinduism originated in India?

India has always been a liberal country for refugees and welcomed them with open arms, right from Sri Lankan Tamils to Tibetan Buddhists, but has never directly interfered - the 1987 Sri Lanka mission being an exception. During the Lankan civil war in 1980s, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had expressed concern about the plight of Tamils and even sent an Indian peace keeping force to maintain peace but the whole mission was a disaster, eventually resulting in his assassination by LTTE. Since then, apart from providing refuge, India has never meddled in neighbouring countries' affairs.

Providing support and refuge to migrants of different countries and religions, India is one of the most welcoming countries for refugees, but like other nations, it hasn't and shouldn't engage directly with affairs of other countries.

India's sole responsibility is to ensure safety of Indians across the world, regardless of their religious beliefs and our record of rescuing its citizens (not just Hindus) has been exemplary, the latest being the Yemen mission led by General VK Singh and Sushma Swaraj.

Through his unresponsiveness to the plight of Hindus in other countries, Modi has made it clear that he won't risk diplomatic relations at any cost. But as already demonstrated, India would always welcome Hindus and provide them refuge, if they choose to migrate. Giving a religious fervour to India's generosity would be an insult to its history.
