Jain girl who died after 68-day fast: 10 things to know

1. Aradhna Samdhariya, 13, studied in Saint Francis School. She was a resident of Pot Bazaar area, Secunderabad.

2. Aradhna was on a fast for 68 days during Chaumasa, the holy period observed under Jainism.

3. In 2014, Aradhna had fasted for eight days. In 2015, she had fasted for 34 days, her father Laxmi Chand told ANI.

4. Father claims nobody forced Aradhna to fast. It was her own decision.

5. After she broke her 54-day fast, she was administered a liquid diet along with glucose drips at home as a precautionary measure.

6. Aradhna's condition worsened on the second day after she broke her fast. She experienced excessive sweating and dehydration. She was then taken to KIMS Hospital for treatment.

7. A report by NDTV states she died of a cardiac arrest on October 4, while being brought to the hospital.

8. After her death, her family held a grand funeral procession called "shobha yatra", which was attended by more than 600 people.

9. Parents and other family members have been booked under IPC Section 304(II) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of IPC and section 75 of JJ (Juvenile Justice) Act, based on a complaint lodged by a local child rights NGO Balala Hakkula Sangham with Market Police Station, Secunderabad.

10. Achuta Rao, the NGO president, has been quoted saying, "Her parents other community members forced the girl to undergo fasting because their jewellery business was in doldrums. Now they are saying their jewellery business is good because of her fast."
