That Haryanvi singer Sapna Choudhary would join politics sooner or later was evident — what we didn’t know was the timing.

At a time when all eyes are on Congress MLAs jumping the boat and creating a tumult in Karnataka, the feisty singer, who's been a crowd-puller for the last few years, Sapna Choudhary has joined the BJP. Not amid much fanfare though.

Why now?

The answers would prove how seasoned Sapna Choudhary has already become.

She was testing the waters

In March, it was rumoured that Sapna Choudhary was joining the Congress — and would contest from Mathura against Hema Malini. There was much excitement. But Sapna Choudhary denied it. And there were claims and counter-claims of whether she had actually joined the party or not. The information came purportedly from Raj Babbar, who was taking care of the party in Uttar Pradesh then.

So, there must have been some developments towards this end. But this finally didn’t materialise.

However, Sapna Choudhary clearly realised the significance of the moment in politics. Winning from Mathura against Hema Malini would have been next to impossible. And a debut loss from the Congress would ensure that her boat toppled even before it started its voyage.

So. Smart.

Not just making speeches

Even if Sapna emerged as the winner from Mathura, what could have she done? She would have made a 10-minute speech for the Lok Sabha. Yes, that’s prestigious. But not for Sapna, who went to Bollywood and then came to her own unique turf because she wants to be a ruling queen.

Not all those who harbour political aspirations want simply to be in Parliament. Sapna seems one of them — and she has already started showing her cards.

Target Delhi

Sapna Choudhary campaigned for Manoj Tiwari before the Lok Sabha Elections. She also joined the saffron party in Delhi — which will go to the Assembly polls next year.

This will be a crucial election for Delhi, going by the takeaways from the Lok Sabha results. There’s ample time for Sapna to explore the scope in Delhi. She has already started speaking against Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal — she will only up her ante now and may become successful in proving that small targets may even yield bigger results.

Smart going, Sapna.
