Four things you did not know about the image that broke the internet's heart

The four-year-old Syrian girl, Hudea, thought the camera was a weapon and lifted her arms in surrender.

1.) The image was taken in December 2014, but took a few months to go viral in the English-speaking world, more so over the last week. The original post has been retweeted more than 11,000 times. 

2.) Osman Sagirli, the photographer, has worked at the Türkiye Newspaper (which first published the image) for 25 years. "I was using a telephoto lens, and she thought it was a weapon," he said. "I realised she was terrified after I took it, and looked at the picture, because she bit her lips and raised her hands. Normally kids run away, hide their faces or smile when they see a camera."

3.) Hudea, the girl in the photograph, is four years old. Osman Sagirli believes children are better able to reflect what refugees in camps endure, than adults are.

4.) It was taken at the Atmeh refugee camp in Syria, near the Turkish border, where the little girl travelled with her mother and two siblings - around 150km from their home in Hama.
