15 hilarious memes that'll clear all your doubts about Aadhaar

One of the bigger and largely ignored problems in India at present is a fight between a small group of people and the government, where the small group of people are occasionally aided by our judiciary. To clear things out, it’s about the Aadhaar.

The creation of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has been cause for concern among civil society groups and political parties since its conception in the UPA government era. Justice KS Puttaswamy, retired justice of the Karnataka High Court, went to court arguing that "Aadhaar infringes on our fundamental right to privacy".

In August 2015, the Supreme Court ruled that the Aadhaar number shall remain optional for welfare schemes. It also added that no one should be denied any benefit because they did not have an Aadhaar number, barring a few specified services. This order was modified in October and an expanded bench ruled that linking of "Aadhaar for providing these services will only be on voluntary basis and no person shall be deprived of any benefit" if they did not have one.

Aadhaar is not even a mandatory document, but has been slowly and effectively pushed by the government. From linking Aadhaar to mid-day meals, to maternity benefits, to income tax to ration cards, the government has done all it can to put this digital leash on Indians, laying the foundations of an Orwellian surveillance state.

Of course, not everyone is ignorant of these insidious, or at least questionable, motives of the government. And it has been the mission of a bunch of people – politicians, journalists and activists – to educate people about the dangers of Aadhaar and how the government is playing fast and loose with orders from the apex court.

A few Twitter users figured out a better way to get the masses educated about this. Instead of going with lengthy articles with tedious legal jargon in it, they went for memes. Simple old memes that will, at least, wake people up from their blissful slumber. If you’re still sleeping, sheeple, it’s time to wake up and smell the Aadhaar.
