Through a year when we have all been feeling shackled, thanks to the pandemic, the lockdown and the restrictions on every aspect of life, we need some avenue towards optimism.

The track Blue River by singer Alisha Batth of Coke Studio fame is a song for the moment. It is a song of unshackling oneself and the tranquillity in letting go. In the singer-composer’s own words, “It is a song of liberation and introspective joy that is inspired by visualisation of an energetic stream of calm. It speaks of the process of letting go while allowing our truths to prevail.” Even as Alisha opens the song, the lyrics and the music in her very serenading and calming rendition convey the depth of the words, “As a blue river runs, through me; It brings me joy and peace.”

There is hope in the song that is brought to the fore with minimal production, perhaps intentional to keep it lyric-oriented. Her silvery voice shines through, singing of desires, love and facing one’s fears. Add to it the mellow strumming of the guitar and her delivery in the characteristic indie-rock-folk style, and you have a song that you would want to wake up to every morning.

The singer has said in her past interviews that Blue River is the first of many singles that will be joining it soon. Till then, we are happy to hold on to this one. So, the next time you find your mood touching shades of blue, turn to Blue River.
