Gurgaon is now Gurugram. No kidding

In a decision that is bound to disorient many, the Manohar Lal Khattar-led Haryana government has renamed its largest city Gurgaon to "Gurugram"!

The neighbouring Mewat district will now be known as "Nuh".

However, looks like it's only a historical makeover because Gurgaon, with a population of 1.7 million people, and a leading financial and industrial hub, a subcity of Delhi, in fact, had been Gurugram to begin with.

"The decision to change the name of Gurgaon as Gurugram has been taken on the basis of the representations received at several fora that it would be appropriate to rename Gurgaon as Gurugram," a Haryana government spokesman said.

"Haryana is a historic land of the Bhagwat Gita and Gurgaon had been a centre of learning. It had been known as Gurgaon since the times of Guru Dronacharya. Gurgaon was a great center of education where the princes used to be provided education," he added.

Obviously, Twitter is not leaving a brilliant opportunity to poke fun at this feckless name change of the bustling "Millennium city".
