5 movies you should consider watching this Independence Day

Over the years, Indian film industry has produced some good patriotic films. Movies that have led to the youth understanding the relevance of independence have connected well with the masses.

Today marks the 75th anniversary of India's independence from the British rule. If you do not have an outing plan with your friends, you can sit back and watch some of the gems from Bollywood.

Here are five movies you should consider watching on the Independence day:

1. Lagaan (2001): Winner of eight National Film Awards, Aamir Khan starrer Lagaan needs no introduction. A film that took great pains to finish from production to direction, went on to acclaim international recognition and a nomination at the Oscars

Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, the film involves a bunch of villagers who are challenged to play a cricket game against Britishers in order to get rid of agricultural taxes which they owe to their province's king. Aamir Khan plays the lead role who, along with other villagers learns the nuances of the game and formulates a team that would go on to play cricket against skilled British players. 2. Chak De India (2007): Shah Rukh Khan in this epic movie leaves no stone unturned in showing his acting skills. The movie became an instant hit as it released on August 15, 2007. It went on to win the Best Film award and Shah Rukh won the Best Actor award at Filmfare awards.

It is a tale of 16 hockey players who fight the odds of their families and their own insecurities to win the Women's Hockey World Cup in Australia. Shah Rukh Khan as the Kabir plays the head coach of Indian team. He constructs a disjointed team that is marred by politics, infighting and several other issues. The climax scene, where Khan delivers the '70 minute' monologue to the team is still remembered by fans today. On the day of independence, this film will be a treat for Indians. See the trailer:

3. Raazi (2018): A real life spy-thriller film based on a novel Calling Sehmat by Harinder Sikka, Raazi is one of the best movies made on India-Pakistan affairs post independence. The film involves Alia Bhatt who plays Sehmat Khan Syed, a Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) agent who gets married to a Pakistani army officer on her father's request so that she can convey secret information to India before India-Pakistan war of 1971.

Moreover, the soundtrack of the film is beautiful and has soulful melodies like Ae Watan which would literally move you to tears. Directed by Meghna Gulzar, Raazi is a movie you can't afford to miss.

4. Rang De Basanti (2006): Aamir Khan once again shines in this drama co-written and directed by Rakesh Om Prakash Mehra. The film involves the journey of a British student who arrives in India to document the story of five Indian freedom fighters of the Indian freedom movement.

She befriends five people from a Delhi University college for her movie. And while making this documentary, they get inspired to fight against the corruption of their own government. The movie was the highest grosser of the year and it also won numerous Filmfare awards. See the trailer:

5. The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002): Last but not the least, this Ajay Devgn-starrer The Legend of Bhagat Singh can't be kept out of any any list of patrotic movies. It is one of the best patriotic movies ever made.

Ajay Devgn plays the role great freedom fighter Bhagat Singh who was hanged to death on March 23, 1931. Along with Devgn, actor Sushant Singh and D Santosh who play the role of Sukhdev and Rajguru respectively. The movie won two National Film Awards including Ajay Devgn, who won the best actor award.
