Dragon Ball Super releases in India this Friday. But why do I see Goku hitting the Floss?

The film follows the success of its predecessor, Dragon Ball Super: Broly, which was reported by the official Dragon Ball news site to have earned over ¥12 billion ($107 million) at the worldwide box office. Super Hero marks the 21st Dragon Ball film in the franchise’s history and is the fourth film under the creative influence of Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama.

The film follows Piccolo and Gohan as they face off against the ultimate androids - Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 - that carry within them the spirit of the Red Ribbon Army, once vanquished by Son Goku. Here's the trailer of the film:

Anime distributor and streaming service, Crunchyroll, released Super Hero on over 3,900 screens across North America, making it the widest ever opening for an anime. In the first weekend of its release last Friday, the film topped the US box office, earning almost double of Universal's survival thriller Beast and landing in first place with $20.1 million.

Super Hero has earned majorly favourable responses from critics and long-time fans alike, earning an aggregate rating of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, though verdict’s still out on whether its predecessor was the better film,

"The story is very simplistic but it worked and was decent. Piccolo and Gohan fans are honestly in for a treat with this film. The 3D animation takes a while to get used to but the action sequences were done really well. However, I do prefer (Dragon Ball Super) Broly by a wide margin"

End of an era: Having run for eight years on Indian television, Dragon Ball Z, the most popular anime in the country amongst the likes of Naruto, Pokemon and Beyblade, was taken off air in 2009 due to licensing disagreements between Cartoon Network and Toonami.

With the advent of streaming services (both legal and otherwise) anime was made more accessible and to a wider audience. The community saw its highest peak in numbers in India, as well as all over the world since its conception.

Anime and its culture was being made available across a variety of different mediums, be it in its original form as paperback manga, adapted into television series for streaming or to be enjoyed on the big screen. As of May 2022, Cartoon Network launched Dragon Ball Super to be aired for the first time in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu in India.

However, the world of anime also found itself in an unlikely crossover event that has had the internet in a frenzy ever since…

Epic Games’ Fortnite, isn’t an unfamiliar name at this point. The infamous free-to-play, battle royale online multiplayer game has had a fairly colourful history to say the least. Regardless of the trolling and criticism, Fortnite is one of the most played video games of all time with over 400 million registered players as of 2021.

Production company Epic Games has found increasingly innovative (albeit controversial) ways to enhance the world of Fortnite which has included a variety of unlikely collaborations with celebrity personalities as well as existing franchises. As of August 2022, Fortnite has over 1,400 skins for players to choose from.

Some of those include,

And most recently, as part of its latest crossover with a popular franchise, Fortnite has been invaded by,

Now, players have access to whole bunch of Dragon Ball characters, accessories and power-ups including,

The internet is having a field day with the latest Fortnite additions,

These ambitious crossovers have made playing the game feel like a fever dream. And though Fortnite is increasingly reshaping cyberspace into something vaguely reminiscent of the Metaverse, as of now, Fortnite is most definitely in all senses, a real ‘multiverse of madness’.
