Shah Rukh Khan’s latest comedy-drama, Dunki, initially slow off the mark, has soared to collect Rs 22.50 crore on Christmas Day, amassing an overall net India collection of Rs 128.13 crore.

According to Sacnilk, Dunki's global collections have hit Rs 206 crore, with overseas earnings standing at Rs 79 crore.

Back on track

  • Dunki had a sluggish start, earning a mere Rs 29.2 crore on its opening day, marking Shah Rukh Khan's lowest debut in 2023 compared to Jawan and Pathan.
  • The movie's theme, being a comedy-drama, didn't immediately captivate audiences like Khan's previous releases.
  • Despite the tough competition from Prabhas’s Salaar, Dunki remarkably picked up, raking in Rs 25.61 crore on the third day, following a collection of Rs 20.12 crore on the second day, coinciding with Salaar's release.

Positive word-of-mouth

  • Audiences' positive responses post-viewing have significantly contributed to its success.
  • Viewers praised Dunki for its blend of emotional storytelling and humor in the first half. Comedy, a staple in Rajkumar Hirani’s films, serves as the backbone in the initial part, while the latter half is emotionally resonant.
  • Many leaving theaters labeled it a complete family entertainer that evokes laughter and contemplation.
  • While critics' opinions varied, its status as a family entertainer and the debut collaboration between Rajkumar Hirani and Shah Rukh Khan are attracting diverse audiences.
  • The movie was specially screened at Rashtrapati Bhavan on December 24, 2023, highlighting its patriotic theme.

About Dunki

  • Dunki draws inspiration from the real-life 'donkey-route,' depicting the illegal pathway to reach London or European countries. It also touches upon the longing of returning to India despite pursuing opportunities elsewhere.
  • Dunki follows the journey of five friends—Hardy, Mannu, Buggu, Sukhi, and Balli—who aspire to reach England. Their inability to speak English becomes a significant obstacle. The group resorts to the 'donkey-route' to flee to London, unaware of the challenges that will test their friendship.
  • Rajkumar Hirani and Gauri Khan jointly produced the film, while the screenplay was handled by Hirani, Abhijat Joshi, and Kanika Dhillon
