From memes to controversies: The life of Pakistan's Aamir Liaquat Hussain

Many of you would have seen meme where a man man with his eyes open says Waah Waah Waah. The man behind this meme was a popular Pakistani TV anchor and politician Aamir Liaquat Hussain. 

Aamir breathed his last at his home Khudadad Colony in Karachi, Pakistan on Friday (June 9). He was facing a number of health issues for quite some time.He was found unconscious in his room by his servants. He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead.

Aamir’s rise to fame started in 2001 when he started a religious programme Aalim Online on Geo TV. The show was a big hit and Aamir went on to host several Ramzan transmissions and game shows on channels like Geo TV, Bol News, ARY Digital and Express TV.

Though Aamir was a meme material for a lot of people, he also had his own tumultuous life which kept him in the news.

The most discussed controversy was about his personal life where he had strained relations with all the three women in his life. Aamir had divorced his first wife, Syeda Bushra Aamir, with whom he had two children and married Syeda Tuba Anwar in 2018. This marriage was also short-lived and it lasted for only three years.

In 2022, Aamir married for the third time with model Dania Shah. But again, this marriage didn’t last and Dania Shah filed for divorce within three months of marriage.

Dania had laid allegations of drug addiction on Aamir. She had also said that Aamir used to torture her. 

Besides this, during his journalistic stint also, he remained in controversies.

CONTROVERSIES AS AN ANCHOR

In 2008, Aamir was criticised for hosting a TV show in which he, along with few others. had passed hateful comments on the minority community and called their murder as an act of religious duty.

In 2011, a video of his show’s behind the scenes was circulated where he was seen talking in a vulgar language with his companions.

In 2013, he had sparked another controversy, where in a TV show, he was seen giving away children to childless couples during the live coverage of Ramzan Transmission.

In 2016, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulator Authority (PEMRA) had barred Aamir from hosting Ram show Inam Ghar where he enacted a suicide of a girl.

In short, Aamir was a celebrated but a very controversial figure in Pakistan.
