Grammy Awards 2023 nominations are out, and Beyonce is leading the race with 9 nods

The Grammy nominees for this season are finally here, with the Queen B leading the nominations race with 9 nods for her latest album Renaissance; and Kendrick Lamar, Adele and Brandi Carlile following close behind with 8 nods each.

What's changed: Following the award ceremony’s boycott by leading artists like Drake and The Weeknd, the Recording Academy changed its nomination procedure. Earlier, a group of music industry peers were in charge of ‘representing their genre communities’. Now, the final pool of nominees for nearly all Grammy awards will be decided by a majority vote of Academy voting members.

The 'Big Four' categories - Album, Song, and Record of the Year, and Best New Artist - as well as genre-specific categories will eliminate committees, but the craft-specific categories will continue to be decided by a select group of industry professionals.

  • The Recording Academy has also committed to expanding its voter pool to further the cause of representation from historically underrepresented communities.

What's new: This year, the Academy has added five new categories to the competition. These new categories being recognized at the 65th Grammys include:

  1. Songwriter of the Year (Non-Classical),
  2. Best Alternative Music Performance,
  3. Best Americana Performance,
  4. Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media, and
  5. Best Spoken Word Poetry Album.
