Here are this year's MTV Movie & TV Award winners

The MTV Movie & TV Awards faced significant obstacles this year due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike. Despite the hurdles, the show managed to deliver a memorable pre-taped event with a slew of popular winners.

Although initially planned as a live broadcast, the strike forced the network to air a pre-taped special, leading to some attendees withdrawing from the show. Nevertheless, the awards continued with enthusiasm and excitement, showcasing the resilience and creativity of the entertainment community.

Here's a bit on why the writers in Hollywood are on a large scale strike: Pay writers or they will spoil Succession... Why you should worry about the Writers Guild strike in the US

Known for its unique approach to awards shows, the MTV Movie & TV Awards occupies a distinctive position in the industry. The event serves as a bridge between the previous year's award season and the current one, which sometimes results in a mix of movies that feel either ineligible for recognition so late into the year or too recent to be considered. However, what sets the MTV Movie & TV Awards apart is its engagement with everyday people, who have the opportunity to vote and shape the outcomes, giving the event a more inclusive and democratic feel.

The host of the awards, Drew Barrymore, unfortunately, had to drop out of her hosting duties due to unforeseen circumstances related to the strike. She expressed her commitment to returning next year and had already pre-recorded the opening segment of the show. In the segment, Barrymore hilariously inserted herself into scenes from highly anticipated films like Cocaine Bear, M3GAN, and Top Gun: Maverick, as well as popular TV shows like The White Lotus, all while dressed as her iconic character Josie Gellar from Never Been Kissed.

One of the highlights of the evening was Pedro Pascal's exceptional performance in The Last of Us, for which he took home the first golden popcorn trophy of the night. Pascal had a remarkable run, securing a total of three awards, including Best Duo with his co-star Bella Ramsey and a trophy for the hit HBO series.

Adding to the star-studded lineup, Tom Cruise made a memorable appearance, reminiscent of his surprise cameo during King Charles III's coronation. Accepting an award while piloting a fighter jet, Cruise expressed his gratitude and love for his fans, stating, "I make these films for you. I love you, I love entertaining you." His appearance added an extra layer of excitement and spectacle to the already electrifying evening.
